Read: Psalm 130
Devotion:
Can you relate to the deep cries of desperation found in this Psalm? The author of this passage is crying out for mercy from what could be grief, doubt, guilt, weariness, or even just the quiet ache of knowing they (we) have fallen short.
Lent begins this way by acknowledging our true location - the depths. We don’t just have physical troubles, but we have a spiritual distance that we create ourselves. In this time, we need to cry out to God about our struggles, confess our sins, and then move to something even harder…waiting. Wait on Him with hope, trusting in His forgiveness and mercy.
“When I Fall” is a song written by Katy Nichole. This song speaks to the desperation of being “tired of trying to be okay; praying all the prayers I have to pray”. But then there is a cry to God - “Lord, please help me now. My soul is cryin’ out”. We are not supposed to pretend that we are strong. Faith begins with crying out.
Verse 3 of Psalm 130 asks the Lord who could stand if He kept track of all of our iniquities. The answer is simple. None of us could! Forgiveness isn’t something that we earn. It’s given to us. Because of that, we can stand again! We can worship again. We can begin again.
Lent is a season of waiting. It’s interesting that the psalmist compares this waiting to watchmen longing for morning light. They don’t doubt that the sun will rise; they just wonder when. They wait in expectation. This is a journey from despairing depths to confident expectation of God’s love. Aren’t you glad that we can confess our sins, receive forgiveness, and then wait for the dawn of Easter morning?
Reflect:
Are you “in the depths” this Lent? Be honest with God (and yourself) about your anxieties, burdens, and regrets.
How has God’s mercy and forgiveness transformed your despair into hope?
Pray:
Lord God, please help me to surrender all of my worries and struggles to you. I lay them down today at your feet. Thank you for the forgiveness that you give so freely. Teach me Lord to wait for You with hope. Please lift me from the depths and walk with me in Your redeeming love. Amen.
