Habakkuk 3:17-19
DEVOTION
Christmas is a time when we make plans to celebrate. We anticipate the joyous gatherings and long for them to arrive. Sometimes, though, “life happens”. Suddenly, those plans seem unimportant and it’s as if the joy has been removed. Today’s reading is a wonderful reminder of how we, as faithful believers, should handle such times. Habakkuk lists a number of possible horrible things that could befall him. Economic collapse, food scarcity, and the loss of every source of stability are echoed in his words. But, his reaction to such events is crucial.
“…yet I will rejoice in the Lord.”
This is not ignorant optimism. It’s not turning a blind eye to what could happen. This is defiant faith. It’s a faith that says to the enemy, “come at me, bro”. This is faith that does not root joy in circumstances, but in God Himself.
The words given in this passage are great for guarding our hearts. Because those moments WILL come. We’re promised that. But, when we stand firm in our faith and truly rejoice in all things, that’s a joy that cannot be broken.
REFLECT
What is either looming on the horizon or directly facing you right now? Will you rejoice in that situation?
Who can you pray for that they might have that same strength?
PRAY
Lord, teach me to rejoice in You even when life is hard. Help me trust You when I cannot see what You’re doing. Be my strength, my security, and my sure footing. Give the confidence to stand firm because You hold me up. Amen.
